14 North American Oil & Gas Pipelines | JUNE 2 018 napipelines.com John Deere Adds SmartGrade Capabilities to North America's Largest Power-Angle-Tilt Dozer John Deere has added SmartGrade capabilities to its 950K Power-Angle-Tilt (PAT) crawler dozer, the largest PAT dozer available in North America. Adding SmartGrade tech- nology to the Dubuque, Io- wa-manufactured dozer im- proves the quality of work and job site accuracy through the complete integration of the Topcon 3D-MC2 Grade- Control System. The system is fully incorporated into the machine cabin, structures and software — delivering precise grading performance while eliminating vulnerable exter- nal masts and cables. "The 950K PAT dozer and our entire SmartGrade lineup have been very successful since their respective launch- es," said Nathan Horstman, crawler dozers product mar- keting manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. "It only made sense to put these two innovations together and provide customers with a game-changer in terms of dozer productivity and ef- ficiency on the jobsite." Integrating SmartGrade into the machine eliminates external cables to the masts, which reduces break- age, and the removal of the masts from the blades helps decrease vul- nerability to theft and damage. SmartGrade technology removes the need to install blade-mounted sen- sors and components daily, reducing setup time, and allows operators to get more work done. A key feature of the integrated machine control is Auto SmartGrade. This allows the operator to easily adjust the system when moving the machine from one soil type to an- other, unlike an after-market system, which often requires the GPS man- ager to make a trip to the machine to recalibrate the system. Particularly helpful to new opera- tors, Auto SmartGrade automatically lifts the blade over heavy loads be- fore track slippage occurs, then re- turns the blade to grade. SmartGrade also limits the number of passes re- quired, reducing the pace of wear on the undercarriage. The John Deere SmartGrade doz- er is nearly 7 percent more accurate across the entire speed range of the dozer when compared to conven- tional masted systems. Another benefit of the Smart- Grade technology is that machine dimensions are preloaded into the grade control monitor, reducing the time required to calibrate the dozer to about 30 minutes. The easy-to-use system is beneficial to new operators in that it can get them up and run- ning quickly. The 950K PAT SmartGrade dozer incorporates an EPA Final Tier 4/EU Stage IV John Deere 9-liter (549-cu in.) engine with 280 hp (209 kW). Contractors will quickly realize that the efficiently designed hydrostatic powertrain will get approximately 15 percent more power to the ground versus a conventional torque-con- verter powertrain. The John Deere dual-path hydrostatic transmission allows an operator to push a full load through turns without losing mate- rial, unlike conventional torque-con- verter transmissions on competitor machines. The 8.6-cu yd (6.6 m³) six-way PAT blade gives the operators the flexibility to place material where they want it on every pass using the blade angle feature. The PAT enhanc- es job site productivity and versatil- ity by executing several tasks that might otherwise require multiple machines. Fleet managers looking to get the most out of their 950K PAT Smart- Grade dozer can rely on their John Deere dealers to provide Ultimate Uptime, featuring John Deere Work- Sight. With Ultimate Uptime, own- ers receive predelivery and follow-up inspections that include five years of JDLink telematics, machine health prognostics, remote diagnostics, pro- gramming capabilities and the abil- ity to add dealer-provided uptime so- lutions to a customized package.
